Hour ChargerDubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahusic Is Under 24 Hour Patronage After Allegedly Receiving A Threatening SMS Message
Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahusic is under twenty four hour protection after reportedly getting a threatening SMS message,croatiantimes.com writes. Although official sources have not confirmed the reason for his increased protection, rumors have it that the mayor received a threatening message that warranted more caution.
Some speculate that the message may have come from cultural milieu hurt by announced grant cuts or from taxi associations objecting against the recent call to extend the amount of cabs in the city from 128 to 166.
The total phenomenon of Dubrovnik can't be incorporated without a more complete understanding of its past which is not, of course, run down by the political and economic facts on which the conventional image of the city's history is based. It is therefore necessary to touch, even though briefly, on the many levels of its past life, e.g.
Its design, inventive and scientific achievements, normal life, connections in the Euro-Mediterranean cultural circle all interpenetrate each other, depend on each other and excite each other, so that is would be troublesome to tell which is of bigger worth in our knowledge of that which we temporarily term DUBROVNIK.
The puzzle shrouding the early medieval history of Dubrovnik is only augmented by the latest archeological research results. During work on the restoration of the present cathedral, underneath the predicted foundations of a Romanesque church, devastated during the great earthquake, the remains of a similarly enormous basilica, dating by its stylistic traits from the 7th/8th century, were uncovered.
Considering the size of the building and its situation in the town, this find didn't fit into the opinions held until then about the city's beginnings and its first centuries of development. Numerous scholarly issues have therefore been raised which are still waiting for their researchers.
Nevertheless it could be determined that the city developed from 2 nuclei, one on the former islet of Lava, and one facing it on the locale of the present Prijeko street, which was a Slavic settlement. During the period from the 10th to the 12 th century the 2 settlements steadily merged by filling in the shallow channel between them, above that the city's main axis, the future main street - Placa - was to be built.
There are too few remains from the early Middle Ages to enable us to form a trustworthy idea about the town, as it then was, its size and business strength or its cultural level. The finds of the pre-Romanesque Early Croatian church of StStephen (Sveti Stjepan), doubtless dating from the 7th/8th century, and mentioned by the Byzantine Emperor-writer Constantine Porphyrogenitus, is of special interest. In the north part of the city there were three tiny churches (St. Luke, St. Nicholas, Sigurata) built in the style of Early Croatian architecture from the period between the 9th and 12th centuries.
Early medieval Dubrovnik probably had its cultural and educated ties and wants. It is understood that Dubrovnik had contacts with centres on the opposite shore of the Adriatic very early on. It doubtlessly also maintained active ties with the other cities of Byzantine Dalmatia, as well as with those in the middle of the Empire. A representative of Imperial power and a high-ranking church dignitary dwelt in the town. The temporal and ecclesiastical authorities had wants which could not be met in the city. As an example, most of the objects utilized in liturgy couldn't have been made by local workmen, e.g. Parts of the reliquary of St. Blaise, still kept in the Cathedral treasury.
Aside from the clergy, the city's development needed a rising number of educated men ready to channel the community's desires towards the constitution of a free municipality. Such a task needed men talented in govt., lawmaking, diplomacy, teaching, for example. Throughout its history Dubrovnik satisfied a part of these desires thru the lively movement of men in the Mediterranean, but the best part, through the exigencies of development, needed to be undertaken by area folk.
On the ethnic and cultural level, very early on there was an active intermingling of the city's Roman and Slavic parts. True, the Slavic component was ultimately to prevail, but unique new values were to arise from the union of the 2. It shouldn't be forgotten that all this occurred in the frame of reference of powerful and certain Mediterranean interconnections and in the shadow of the Greek and Roman heritage which Croatian Dubrovnik indubitably carried on from the 14th century down to the dawn of the modern age.Kodak K6200 one-hour charger
