What is an electric impact wrench? Whether you call it an impact wrench, air wrench, rattle gun or even a torque gun, it’s the same piece of power tool excellence that is used to get tough jobs done real quick. The electric impact wrench is available in different sizes, from ¼ inch through ½ inch and 3/8 inches right up to the 1 inch impact wrench, the 1/4 and the 3/8 impact wrenches. The impact wrench also comes in different varieties, be it air powered or electrical. The main arena of use for the rattle gun is principally in the automotive manufacturing and servicing industries, where the electric impact wrench is used to insert the and tighten lug nuts when putting tires in place. It is also used in the opposite capacity when loosening stubborn nuts and removing wheels. Apart from car industry, it has varied applications at the construction site, where structural steel frameworks are assembled and using the electric impact wrench.
One of the biggest criticisms applied to traditional air guns is that they are quite an unwieldy tool to use - particularly in a restricted environment such as a workshop. An air gun or impact wrench has traditionally required a great deal of air pressure in order to give it the force needed to work properly, and this has meant it being connected permanently to an air supply or compressor, and having a large trailing air hose all the time. With a cordless impact wrench, it is possible to entirely dispense with the air hose and air compressor, and give yourself the freedom to move around the workshop quickly and conveniently.
You can get adapters to fit different size drives with sockets, but at the very least, it'll give you a quick and easy way to narrow down your search. And why bother getting a different size than you need? Finally, a common mistake is to under-estimate how much power you'll need. Taking off the wheels on your car is a common example. The manufacturers recommended torque for your lug nuts is probably between 80-140 ft-lbs, so people will "play it safe" and get a wrench with a 220 ft-lb max torque. The problem with this is firstly that the max torque in an impact wrench is always more than your "working torque", and not all companies give out that information.
The other problem is that you are not taking into account any real life factors, like rust and other weathering, which will make your lug nuts harder to get off. For most cars and light trucks I recommend a wrench with a max torque of 4-500 pounds, just to make sure you've got enough (it would suck to have to manually break each of your lug nuts because your new impact wrench isn't powerful enough).
For uses other than taking off lug nuts, you'll want to find out what you're suggested torque rating is, and then add a decent safety factor to account for the difference between max torque and working torque (if working torque isn't provided by the company), and for any outside factors that'll make your nuts harder to get off.
